Great User Manuals is what we do, but we've paid our writing dues with professional papers, feature articles, safety articles, and more. We've paid our technical and customer focus dues with an MIT Ph.D. and 30 years in industry. We're ready to help you with great user manuals!

Great User Manual Samples

This chapter addresses the hardest topic in learning a complex, computer-driven flight instrument system. Written at no charge, it let the customer be confident of what they were getting.
"Good Judgment, Excellent Decisions" is the first draft safety-of-flight manual for a new very light jet -- owner / pilots won't waste time on flabby prose. It's scheduled for a mid-summer 2006 release.

Professional Papers

The Myth of the Unstable Approach was presented at the 2004 ISASI Conference in Queensland, Australia. A fresh look at existing data showed that unstable approaches don't "cause" accidents, they're pervasive. The article concludes with new directions for aviation safety research.
Why'd They Do That? was presented at the 2005 Aviation Psychology Symposium. This analysis technique discusses factors not previously articulated -- such as "mindset," upon which this paper is based. The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association printed a derivative article.
1,001 Runway Incursions will be presented at the 2007 Aviation Psychology Symposium. Based on over 1,000 NASA ASRS reports, this paper documents a large number of factors in runway incursions and taxi errors, including a number of factors not previously reported in the literature.
In Search of Collegiate Flight "Education" discusses the how students preparing for an airline career are not necessarily prepared as a flight instructors, the standard entry-level piloting job, because they are trained, not educated. This paper inspired a column in Flying magazine. "If you train to minimum standards, does that mean that the only passing grade is 100%?"

Feature Articles

This story is about four days spent learning the tricks and quirks of landing a Pitts biplane, reputed to be one of the hardest planes to land. This dose of humility took me back to student pilot days.
F1 Rocket is a pilot report, analogous to an automotive road test article. This copy is as submitted to Kitplanes Magazine, and was published in late 2005.
A Vimy is a WWI bomber, originally built by Vickers in England. This modern reproduction was later flown across the Atlantic by Steve Fossett, and I helped build it -- a little. Also for Kitplanes.
WiringYour Panel was published in Kitplanes Magazine. The editors shuffled paragraphs for a new lead and bridge, and added illustrations. The body is virtually untouched, and the photographs are by the author. This article was researched at an aviation trade show.
Katrina Mississippi Christmas was written for a regional church publication about two volunteers who spent Christmas helping survivors.

Aviation Safety Articles

"Scud running" is flying at low altitudes, dodging both clouds above and terrain below. The FAA reprinted this monthly column as a feature article in a safety newsletter.
Homebuilt airplanes can be much more fun to fly than factory built airplanes, but who can teach you to fly one? This piece, reprinted by the EAA and elsewhere, helps you find an appropriate instructor.
Homebuilt airplanes, like so many items, are often marketed to sell, not to meet real needs. This article helps you wade through the fluff and determine what will make that airplane be good for you.

Short Articles

Drake, AZ was a feature story written for a news writing class. Since I've been selling features for 15 years, this was more fun than challenge.
Friday Sunset is personal and unpublished. It tells of unusual happenings when we returned home two weeks after my mother died.
The picture (left) is of me and Chorny, our loving
and well-trained black Lab, enjoying
the national forest a half mile
from our home.
